How to Disable the Write Protection on Dell Windows 10 USB Recovery Sticks - ROUND 4

The world is full of different kinds a people, but one thing that seems to bring us all together is that everyone wants to be able to write to their Dell USB recovery drive. I'm not yet convinced that this one little slice of common ground can end wars and dispel years of hatred, but the one thing I am sure of is that with just the slightest effort... we can all write to these things.

It's been a while, but finally we have a solution for the Dell Windows 10 recovery drives. This time Tom Weber posted the solution in the round 3 post. Thanks Tom. All I did below was take his solution and add some screen clips. All the credit should go to him.

As of the time of this post, this works for all Dell Windows 10 USB recovery flash drives.

Download MPALL_F1_7F00_DL07_v503_0A.rar from Mega.nz and uncompress it to a folder. The Mega.nz decryption key is !3mpx__atjBu-zBVtxTlvsya-uiIsSFK7q5ddcULiCgw and the MD5 hash of the file is E37A0C352EFF3415E7DB2E6A6CF7F5EB. With this hash you should be able to verify that the file you downloaded is exactly the same as the file I uploaded. I can't guarantee anything else about this file. Use it at your own risk.

Caution! The following steps WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON THE USB DRIVE!

Once you've downloaded and uncompressed the MPALL utility, drill down into the folder and run MPALL_F1_7F00_DL07_v503_0A.exe.

If you haven't already plugged your Dell USB stick in, plug it in now and click the Update button.

The USB drive should show up in one of the boxes. If it doesn't, try moving it to a different USB port and clicking the Update button again. Repeat as needed. Keep trying different USB ports until the drive shows up in the utility.

Once MPALL shows the USB device is connected, click the Setting button.

Select Basic Setting and New Setting and click OK.

In the settings window, click the Controller drop down and select PS2251-07. Select USB 2.0 or 3.0 from the Host Port drop down depending on what type of port you have the drive plugged into.

Check the Do ISP and Erase code block check boxes. Click Select to browse to the burner file BN07V502TAW.BIN and the firmware file FW07V50253TW.BIN in the MPALL_F1_7F00_DL07_v503_0A folder.

Next, under the Customise Setting section, uncheck the Auto Detect box  and input the VID 0930 and PID 1400.

Your settings should look something like this. At this point, you can hit the Save button and close the settings window or click Save As and save the settings to an .ini file. With the .ini file you can quickly load the settings in the future either here, on the setting page, or in the drop down in the upper right of the main MPALL window.

Back at the main window, you might need to click Update again if your drive isn't displayed or is grayed out. When you're ready, click the Start button and relax.

After a few seconds, you should see your drive displayed in green and it should be writable.

This method works for now, but we've seen at least four iterations of these USB flash drives that require different software to low-level format. Something will change and we'll be back to square one again. Good luck.

After that I used Diskpart to:

    format fs = ntfs

When I copy a 5GB-File on the Stick, it starts fast but gets stuck at around 40%, when I press abort the stick gets disconnected.

  23. Can confirm it works for me. We have a whole office building's worth of DELL computers that all came with these sticks. This helps make them slightly useful. Slow writing speed, of course, but better than nothing. The P/N on the blue label says VJ3VF_A00. Also cool that you can flash multiple USB sticks at once, as long as they're all plugged into USB 2.0. Can't say anything about USB 3.0 as my own work PC is pretty old, but reliable.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "After a few seconds, you should see your drive displayed in green and it should be writable."
Yes, it works, but only for a minute or two. When I copy 1,2 GB folder, usually ends on 40% and write protection is back! I need more time, to copy all data and after that nevermind that is protected again.

  25. I tried doing this on a Windows 10 computer and it blue-screened shortly after I clicked "Start". However, it works great on a Windows 7 computer.

  27. Worked for us with several sticks, however some got bricked. We realized we didn't only have Win10 Sticks, some seemed to be Win8, some Win10.

All of the sticks got 4 numbers engraved on the plug.

So at least we got 26 sticks out of 28 that we can now use for better things.

    Thanks a lot!
I found out that our current Windows 10 had labels with 1629 and 1651 which all worked well with this tutorial. Also the Win8 stick with 1448 seemed to work. What didn't work was the 1501 one. After killing 2 of them I tried it with the Silicon Formatter from the round 3 post.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Seems as if my comment got stripped a bit. The Silicon Formatter worked for the 1501 ones, so we now can use 26 of 28 sticks which is amazing. Thanks a lot.

  31. I can confirm that as of 31 March 2017 it is working just fine. I got 5 new Dell Latitude E5470's and imaged them for normal use. The 5 USB sticks were nice but essentially unusable for me as we"re still on Windows 7 (Defense contractor, that's why). Using this tool and carefully following the very clear instructions resulted in 5 more usable flash drives for whatever I want to use them for!

    Thank you!

    1. Short answer is... we don't know.

Slightly longer answer is... I monitor outbound traffic from the system that I use this software and USB drives on. I'm reasonably sure that there are no indications that would lead me to believe the system is compromised.

Long answer... Anyone posting here, including me, could be lying to you, mistaken, or just plain stupid. You also don't know if the drive you just low-level formatted was dirty before you used this software and you don't know if the brand new, shrink wrapped, Kingston, USB drive you just opened is dirty or not.

If you have a genuine need to be absolutely sure that USB sticks are not a risk to your system, you need to not be using USB sticks. Next best thing would be to posses the knowledge, skills, and tools to prove, on your own, that the drive is clean.

  35. Successfully flashed BOTH of my sticks! First one, worked perfect. Second failed 4 times, toggling setting (USB2.0/3.0) seemed to fix this as well as moving USB port. Very pleased :D

Having previously failed to resolve these useless USB sticks earlier this year (possible failure when following instructions) - requirement came for a USB stick today so I given it another shot. The USB's serial is PA5080L-MM8N. Labelled "Made in the USA" and "Made in Taiwan", very interesting.

  58. Round 5:
    (0. Insert a new DELL U3-8GDSTS flash drive into a usb port - I used a usb2.0 port)
    1. Download SMI MPTool V2.5.36 v7 from here: http://flashboot.ru/files/file/445/ (Direct Download: http://flashboot.ru/files/file/445/download/sm3267_v2536_aa3/)
    2. Extract the RAR and open the "sm32Xtest_V36-7.exe" as admin
    3. Press "Setting" - Password: 320
    4. Load the "default.ini" or download the content of my already customized "DELL_ROUND_5.ini" (https://pastebin.com/vv06mB8V) and load it.
4.1. When loading the "default.ini", under the tab "Capacity Setting" change the "Bad Block" value from 44 to 60.
    5. Press "OK" to close the settings, click on "Scan USB" (or press F5), wait for the flash drive to show up and then hit "Start" - after 30 to 60 seconds you'll have an unlocked DELL 8GB flash drive ;)

    Cheers!

    2. Roman, since I had more than a dozen of those new silver dell usb flash drives, let me tell you that it happened to me too, but after a restart as well, the SMI MPTool (which hung up during format phase in my case) recognized flashs again and another flashing attempt worked like a charm.

So when the tool is taking more than 60 seconds (as written in my instructions above), don't be afraid of killing the tool via taskmanager or just directly restarting Windows! Btw. I used an old Lenovo X201 with Windows 10 Enterprise x64 (Build 1703).

  61. one silver DELL U3-8GDSTS dead: "Bad Block over setting (11) (User-7600 (M) > FW-7584 (M))"

    1. on http://www.usbdev.ru/articles/a_smi/smimptool-repair/ is

      Bad Block over setting (11)

Pretest = Erase All Block.

      **************************
      Bad Block over setting (11) (User-3724 (M) > FW-3584 (M))

      Delete
    2. I tried another version SMIMPTOOL-REPACK_V2-5-42-7_O0515v1 - http://www.usbdev.ru/?wpfb_dl=5219 . For the first time with default settings 44 bad blocks - the same error. The second time with 60 bad blocks and flash is ready and OK. Maybe just run a few times.

      Delete
    3. That's why I increased the bad blocks from 44 to 60 (step 4.1. in my instructions). Actually 59 is already working ;) and anything above 60 will work too (tried 120, 100, etc.) but due to the higher value of bad blocks, the usable capacity of the flash will decrease (e.g. from 7,38GB to 7,09GB) so I picked 60 since it worked with 59 and I thought that a bit buffer is better ;)

I don't think it has something to do with other repacked SMIMPTOOL you've used since both versions support the "67AB" chipset. But maybe some flash drives require 61 or 62 when there is still a "Bad Block over setting" error messages. You can play around with the bad block setting (as I did) and you'll noticed that the values (User: 7600M and FW: 7584M) will also change and there's a point when the setting for bad blocks is fitting so that the error message will disappear and the flash format normally.

      Cheers!

My guess is that this flash drives are hackable too when they have write-protection since there are several instructions online from usbdev.ru, e.g.

    Controller Vendor: SMI
    Controller Part-Number: SM3267AE - ISP 160105-1AE
    Flash ID code: 2C64444B - Micron MT29F64G08CBABA - 1CE/Single Channel [MLC-8K] -> Total Capacity = 8GB

This doesnt appear on SMI MPTool. Sticks with SM3267AB worked flawlessly.

  76. Hi, now I used for Silver flash direct USB 3.0 port, and the flash apears in SM3267_V2.5.36 without USB adapter. I tried use only 44 bad block in Settings, test of Write I must Quit and restart computer. After that I have to format it and now this flash has capacity 8 082 423 808 byte, another flash with 59 or 60 bad block has 7 935 561 728 byte. It's about 147 MB more of capacity. Also you can try first only 44 bad block, if not so you can use 59 bad block.

  78. OK :-) For Chip Part-Number: SM3267AES - ISP 160105-1AE
    you have to use SMI MPTool V2.5.54 v6 Q0207B2 [SM3267AE] - http://www.usbdev.ru/files/smi/smimptool/ (direct link: http://www.usbdev.ru/?wpfb_dl=6960 )

Default bad block=44 is OK for me.

  79. for last silver flash (VID = 1B8F PID = 0338, SM3267ABS - ISP 140707-1AB) I used only 15 bad block setting and the flash is unblocked. But the flash is slow, only 39MB/s read, 17MB/s write. Another flashes (the same, VID = 090C PID = 1000, SM3267ABS - ISP 140707-1AB) have 120MB/s read and 30MB/s write.

I dont know why? Is possible, when I use bigger Bad Block number the flash is quicker?

  89. The latest Dell Win10 Recovery flash drives are silver with a blue label. I tried all the programs listed above and their latest versions. I also tried several other low formatting programs and nothing worked. Then I found SMI MPTool v2.5.42 v7 O0505 [SM3267AB] from http://www.usbdev.ru/files/smi/smimptool/ Launch the program sm32Xtest_V42-7.exe and plug in the flash drive. If the program doesn't automatically detect the drive press the "Scan USB" (or hit F5). Click the "Setting" button (password: 320) and select the Default.ini. Click "start" and moments later the process is complete. Remove the flash drive and plug it back in and you're in business! Have more than one of these flash drives? Just plug the next one in and wait for the program to detect it and press "Start". Or, if you have enough USB ports available you can do up to 16 flash drives at once!
